Los Tacos No. 1
Website: Los Tacos No. 1
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Mexican cuisine, fair prices, simple menu
When craving authentic Mexican street food, New Yorkers make a beeline to Los Tacos No. 1, which is arguably the most famous tacos in the city. The founders (originally from Tijuana & California) noticed a lack of authentic tacos in the city’s cuisine and opted to bring that Mexican flavor to Manhattan.
A simple menu pays homage to the traditional flavors of our southern neighbors. Things like corn tortillas made in-house (always get corn) and pineapple slivers in their bestselling adobada tacos have helped propel them above their competition. It’s a relaxed spot where the food speaks volumes, making it a favorite among locals and visitors craving genuine Mexican flavors in Chelsea.
Miznon
Website: Miznon
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 435 W 15th St, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Mediterranean cuisine, quick bites
Nestled within the renowned Chelsea Market, Miznon serves as a place of comfort for New Yorkers in search of genuine Mediterranean street food. Originally opening in Tel Aviv and expanding to Paris, Vienna and Melbourne, the joint eventually made its way to New York City.
Miznon quickly gained recognition following the launch of their first U.S location in 2018. Serving authentic Israeli inspired bites, the flavors are unmatched. I recommend ordering the lamb kebab pita or the rotisserie broken chicken pita. Another stand out is the folded cheeseburger.
Locals Tip: Once you’re finished eating at one of the top restaurants in Chelsea, make sure to explore the rest of the market. If you need something sweet to finish off your meal, Doughnuttery has some of the best donuts in NYC.
LouLou
Website: LouLou Petit Bistro
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 176 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: French-inspired cuisine, great wine selection, intimate atmosphere
Named after owner Mathias Van Leyden’s rescue dog, LOULOU is a French restaurant that’s just as adorable as his pup. Colorful flowers adorn the outside of this Chelsea restaurant, stopping folks in their tracks to take pictures.
What makes this restaurant stand out (aside from the amazing food) is that the lower level of the bistro is a speakeasy, churning out creative cocktails, nightly. The drinks are not only innovative and clever, but they’re presented in some of the cutest glasses I’ve ever seen. Just take a look at the menu and you’ll understand the appeal.
I recommend ordering the croissant French toast (yes it’s a real thing!) and the “world is yours” cocktail (Gin, Sake, creme de peache & edible flowers served in an orb). Both are delicious and warrant a visit alone.
Dallas BBQ
Website: Dallas BBQ
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 261 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Generous portions, casual atmosphere, menu variety
Dallas BBQ brings Texas-style ribs to New York City masterfully and is a must-try food joint in Chelsea for anybody who loves meat. The restaurant is a no-frills, straightforward neighborhood joint with a friendly staff and generous portions (everything is bigger in Texas).
Take the sticky wings for example, which are so big they could make a small chihuahua take flight. Between the hefty portions and the ability to host large groups, Dallas BBQ is one of the best family-friendly restaurants in Chelsea.
Socarrat Paella Bar
Website: Socarrat Paella Bar
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 259 W 19th St, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Spanish cuisine, friendly staff, great wine and sangria selection
Socarrat Paella Bar is renowned for its authentic Spanish paellas, cooked to perfection in traditional wide pans. The restaurant offers various paella options, from seafood to meat or vegetable-based, all featuring that coveted crispy socarrat at the bottom—a mark of skillful preparation. For those who don’t know, socarrat is the crispy layer that forms at the bottom of a paella dish.
Beyond paella, the menu boasts an array of delectable Spanish tapas that beautifully showcase the diverse flavors of Spanish cuisine. Dishes like patatas bravas, Spanish tortillas, and chorizo al vino are among the favorites. If at all helpful, I suggest ordering the arroz negro paella which is cooked in squid ink.
Coppelia
Website: Coppelia
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 259 W 19th St, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Latin comfort food, open 24/7, fair prices
Since its establishment in 2011, Coppelia has provided the community with 24/7 access to Cuban food. From beloved Latin favorites such as Huevos Rancheros and Chilaquiles to timeless classics like steak & eggs, the all-day breakfast menu caters to a wide range of tastes.
Coppelia is also one of the more affordable restaurants in Chelsea to get brunch with options on the menu ranging anywhere from $5 to less than $30. As well as cocktails ringing in around $12-$15, what a steal! I strongly recommend ordering the Cubano Sandwich, one of the best in New York City.
Gallow Green
Website: McKittrick Hotel
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 542 W 27th St, New York, NY 10001
Good to Know: Rooftop setting, seasonal menu, occasional live music
Found on the rooftop of the McKittrick Hotel, Gallow Green is set amidst what feels like a post-card setting. The menu is relatively small, however, this is one of the best restaurants in Chelsea for top-notch drinks. The impressive cocktails are priced similarly to most other quality bars in the city (around $20-22).
Knowing this place was popular for the drinks and atmosphere, I was pleasantly surprised when the food I ordered was up to par. I highly recommend ordering the steak & frites if you’re hungry.
Shukette
Website: Shukette
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 230 9th Ave, New York, NY 10001
Good to Know: Popular brunch spot, lively atmosphere, great drinks
Serving hot plates of tantalizing Middle Eastern fare, Shukette is a true gem. Plates of steaming, perfectly spiced meats, bread, and vegetables are prepared and presented beautifully before locals who are wide-eyed and hungry.
The modern Middle Eastern plates are curated by chef Ayesha Nurdjaja (previously of Shuka, and a James Beard Award Finalist for Best Chef NY) so it’s no surprise Shukette is considered one of the greats. It’s also worth mentioning that the Chelsea restaurant is best frequented with friends because there’s a plethora of dips and shareable appetizers.
Pepe Giallo
Website: Pepe Gaillo
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 195 10th Ave, New York, NY 10001
Good to Know: Italian cuisine, cozy atmphosphere
In a city brimming with Italian restaurants, Pepe Giallo manages to stand out. Their sole focus? Crafting incredibly hearty dishes. For over a quarter-century, this beloved Chelsea dining spot has cultivated a devoted following. Its loyal customers wouldn’t dream of satisfying their pasta cravings anywhere else.
The vibe is perfect for a casual date night or clinking glasses of wine with an old friend. Whether you’re sitting indoors or outside on the rustic back patio, nothing will convince you to look up from your plate until it’s clean. My suggestion is to order the penne vodka, made with a creamy sauce that has a subtle kick. As one of the best budget-friendly restaurants in Chelsea, most dishes are under $20 and punch above their weight.
Elmo
Website: Elmo
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 156 7th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: American fare, brunch hotspot, lively ambiance
Elmo offers a diverse menu with a modern twist on American comfort food, featuring dishes like burgers, salads, pastas, and innovative small plates. The trendy Chelsea restaurant fits the bill on many occasions thanks to its large space and attentive staff.
Don’t hesitate to order the truffle fries, you’ll find yourself throwing them back like Tic-Tacs. Since lines are all but guaranteed at this lively Chelsea restaurant, plan your trip in advance and make reservations to save you some trouble.
Worth Noting: Elmo hosts Dj’d music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. As well as an energetic brunch on Sundays.
Empire Diner
Website: Empire Diner
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 210 10th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: American fare, local landmark, full of history
If you’re on the hunt for a place that blends nostalgia and quality dining, consider Empire Diner a must-visit. This restaurant offers a contemporary twist on the iconic diner aesthetic, serving the neighborhood of Chelsea since 1976 with authentic American cuisine and a classic ambiance.
You can expect typical diner fare, from the traditional eggs & bacon breakfast to a juicy burger with fries. Regardless if you’re stopping by for breakfast or a late lunch, the freshly baked buttermilk biscuits are non-negotiable and must be ordered. To avoid potential lines at this beloved Chelsea restaurant, I suggest starting your day at Empire Diner.
Buddakan
Website: Buddakan
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Asian fusion cuisine, cozy atmosphere, ideal date night spot
Buddakan presents a contemporary approach to Asian cuisine, offering a diverse array of dishes, from seafood specialties to expertly crafted dim sum, all prepared to perfection. The restaurant’s lavish interior mirrors its sophistication, boasting extravagant chandeliers, lengthy communal tables, and a warm ambiance created by flickering candlelight.
Five-star service is offered by the staff, which is appropriate for such a sophisticated setting. Because of this, Buddakan ranks among Chelsea’s top restaurants for commemorating a significant birthday, anniversary, or promotion.
Westville Chelsea
Website: Westville
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 88 7th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Quick bites, healthy options, vegan-friendly
Westville’s menu is compiled of options for people with all sorts of dietary restrictions. Vegans, vegetarians and folks who enjoy eating out but still want to eat clean are all welcome here. This Chelsea restaurant serves classic American fare like salads, burgers, and hotdogs. The brunch here is also worth making a detour for.
I recommend ordering the California Benedict which is your typical eggs and Benedict but with hash browns instead of English muffins. If you’re a health nut looking for one of the healthiest places to eat in Chelsea then Westville has to be at the top of your list.
Cookshop
Website: Cookshop
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Location: 156 10th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Good to Know: Seasonal menu, brunch hotspot, supports local farmers and uses sustainable practices
Cookshop’s bright and airy interior floods with natural sunlight in the mornings, creating a fresh and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant buzzes with eager folks ready to eat their body weight in brunch food. Expect to find modern American fare and don’t even think about leaving without ordering the beignets (served with a seasonal compote and ricotta). You’ll be flagging the waiter down for a second order immediately.
Cookshop’s farm-to-table approach is highly praised and has created a loyal following from both tourists and locals alike. As one of Chelsea’s top dining spots, securing reservations in advance is a must—this place books up fast. Weekend waits might stretch an hour, but believe me, the wait is absolutely worthwhile.
