Things to Do in New York City in June
Sunset Salsa at Hudson River Park
Starting Thursday June 1st, Hudson River Park is turning Pier 76 into one big dance floor. Every Thursday until August folks are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and try their hand at Salsa dancing. I know this may sound intimidating but once you get going it’s hard to stop.
Beginners lessons start at 6:30 PM that will have you loose and confident in no time. By the time the open dance portion (7:15 PM) rolls around, everyone is already grooving. If it makes you feel better, just remind yourself everyone is there for the same reason — to dance!
Expect a hodgepodge of locals, visitors, professionals and folks with two left feet. The instructor Talía Castro-Pozo is talented and friendly. It’s hard not to enjoy yourself when partaking in one of the best things to do in New York City in June.
Something to note: This is a free event. However Hudson River Park is not funded by the city so free events thrive off of donations. You can show your support by donating here.

Hunt down the best donut on National Donut Day
One of the best things to do in New York City this June is to treat yourself to some of the best confectionery treats you can get your hands on. You’ll find places like Dunkin’ Donuts run specials offering free donuts with the purchase of a drink for National Donut Day.
But if you’re looking to take it up a notch while visiting NYC this June, I’ll leave you with a round-up of some of the best donuts the city has to offer and what to order at each:
- Dominique Ansel | Cronut: croissant + donut… need I say more?
- Doughnuttery | Cinnamon or Fruit Cereal (these are mini donuts so you can try a lot of flavors).
- Doughnut Plant | Creme Brûlée (it’s just as delicious as it sounds).
- The Doughnut Project | Those Beetz Are Dope (Ricotta whipped filling with a beet glaze, just trust me).

Peruse the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit
The event started back in 1931 when an artist was hurting for funds and desperate to pay his rent. He gathered a few of his paintings and set his sights on Washington Square Park where he was hoping he’d sell them. A friend of his in a similar situation decided to join him.
Something neither of the men were expecting was to catch the attention of some big dogs in the art world such as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (founder of the Whitney Museum of Art) and Alfred H. Barr, Jr., (Director of the Museum of Modern Art).
Fast forward to today, it’s a public event held twice a year to showcase the work of a selected few artist (chosen by a jury of fellow artists). Perusing the intricate artwork is one of the best things to do in NYC in June. It also makes for an easygoing summer date night.
Explore Photoville
In order to improve the accessibility and understanding of art and photography, Photoville, a nonprofit organization, works to foster greater awareness of both.
Every year Photoville holds an outdoor photo gallery event that stays up for a few weeks. And for the first time ever, exhibits will be peppered around all five boroughs. With over 80 exhibits to wander, spending an evening perusing the photography is one of the best things to do in New York City in June.
The best part? The outdoor exhibition is completely free.
For those visiting New York City in the beginning of June make sure to add the opening ceremony to your calendar. On June 3rd and 4th, Photoville is welcoming the return of the event with a big celebration hosted in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
There will be workshops, installations and even activities for kids. This is one of the best free events going on in New York City in June for families looking to stay busy. For a full list of where you can find exhibits visit Photoville’s official website.

If you’re visiting New York City in June make sure you don’t miss Shakespeare in the Park! The event is hosted by The Public Theater, an organization that has performed Shakespeare’s plays for over 60 years, for free!
You’ll find the plays being performed at the 1,800 seat Delacorte Theater in Central Park. For tickets you’ll have to arrive at the theater the day of the performance, but they’re a hot commodity.
There’s some serious, professional level production value going into the performances. You’ll quickly understand why folks are so eager to get in line for tickets. Plus, the shows are enjoyable for audiences of all ages and interests.
Shakespeare in the Park is one of the most popular things to do in New York City in June so you’re going to want to show up early. Or you can always attempt to win digital-lottery tickets. Stand-by tickets are distributed at noon everyday there is a performance.

Watch the National Puerto Rican Day Parade
And since 1958 one of the best things to do in New York City in June has been to celebrate your Caribbean neighbors at the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. The parade marches down Fifth Avenue from 43rd to 79th Streets on June 11th, beginning at 11AM.
It’s estimated more than one million spectators cheer on the parade annually. Meaning it’s one of the most popular things to do in New York City in June. It only makes sense, boricuas (Puerto Ricans) know how to party!
This year’s theme is Musica, Cultura y Alegria which translates to Music Culture and Joy. As such you can expect plenty of entrancing music as the floats pass during this year’s National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Watch the NY Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks
I encourage everyone to check out a showing. Classical music isn’t to everybody’s taste but seeing it live is entirely different. The shows are epic and monumental, and an experience you won’t soon forget. Summer in New York City wouldn’t be the same with out Concerts in the Parks!
For those looking for memorable things to do in New York City in June, there are five shows to choose from during the month:
- June 13th: Van Cortlandt Park
- June 14th: Central Park
- June 15th: Cunningham Park
- June 16th: Prospect Park
- June 18th: Staten Island (indoor show)
Each performance starts at 8:00 PM (with the exception of the Staten Island show which is at 4:00 PM). And will be followed up with a firework show.
More information on showtimes and locations can be found here.

Spend the evening bopping around a Night Market
After moving to New York City, I quickly realized something… I love markets! I know it sounds so silly but never in my life have I ever had this kind of access.
Exploring a night market is one of the best things to do in New York City in June. The amount of food, drinks, art and live performances right at your fingertips under the gorgeous summer skies? Insane! The weather is comfortable and with the sun setting later in the evening, don’t expect to be home before bedtime.
Living on the Upper West Side, I’m partial to the Uptown Night Market. Between April and November, on every second Thursday of each month I am blessed with this spectacle.
Everyone has heard of bar hopping, but have you ever heard of vendor hopping? That’s exactly where you can find me whenever the Uptown Night Market is up and running. This is one of the best things to do in New York City in June if you’re into trying a little bit of everything.
Enjoy authentic savory food or chilled sweet treats, catch whatever live performance is happening and soak in the the beauty that is night time in New York City.

Catch an outdoor movie at the Rooftop Cinema Club Midtown
Prepare yourself for a movie viewing experience unlike anything you could imagine. Thanks to the Rooftop Cinema Club, you can watch some of the most timeless films under the open sky in New York City in June.
On the roof of the Embassy Suites in Midtown you’ll find lounge chairs and personal headphones to maximize comfort during your movie. The hotel provides a full bar and restaurant, and you’ll also find a concessions stand with typical movie snacks. This fun New York City June activity is hard to replicate elsewhere.
Arriving early and with your full party is paramount since the seats are first come first serve. Doors open an hour before the showing so there’s ample time for drinks and snacks too. The summer in New York City is never boring thanks to the Rooftop Cinema Club.

Or at the Seaport Cinema
Doors open at 6 PM, and movies start at 7 PM. Catching a flick at the Seaport Cinema is one of the most popular things to do in NYC in June because it’s one of the few places to watch an outdoor movie with chairs (no grass stains on jeans here, folks!).
With that said, seating is limited so be sure to reserve tickets in advance. Or show up early to save your butt from falling asleep. If you can’t get to a chair quick enough, you can bring a foldable one from home.

Now you may not get as big of performers at the Hudson Yards Summer Concerts but you’ll still be getting a hell of a show. Every Wednesday from June 21st – August 9th at 6:00 PM the Public Square & Garden will host the free outdoor concert.
What makes the concerts one of the best things to do in New York City in June is the fact that after the performances, a few restaurants and bars in The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards will hold “After Hours” events with a live DJ and specials.
June performances you can look forward to:
- Geese: June 21st
- Thuy: June 28th
Take a stroll through the impressive High Line
The High Line is one of the most unique parks in New York City. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, High Line Park was born from an eye-sore. The elevated tracks this NYC park was built on were originally used by freight trains delivering cargo to the city. A practice that became moot with the rise in trucking.
For ages, the railroad track was abandoned and neglected but the High Line opened in 2009 and became an instant success. The elevated promenade stretches 1.5 miles and receives an average of 8 million visitors annually.
If you’re wondering what makes visiting the High Line one of the few can’t miss things to do in New York City in June I’m going to give you more than 150,000 reasons: plants. Indeed, more than 150,000 plants adorn the park and in the summer the vibrant colors can’t be ignored.
If you need another reason as to why visiting the High Line is one of the best things to do in New York City in June let me help you. In the summer month the park brings in vendors that sell artwork, drinks and even ice cream.
It’s a fun spot to bring the family to burn off some energy and to leave with a treat!

Make reservations at Grand Banks while you can
During the colder months, New Yorkers say goodbye to the delicious waterfront restaurant and count down the days until Grand Banks has its grand reopening. So if you find yourself visiting in the summer and are looking for things to do in New York City in June, I suggest making a beeline to this popular dining spot.
Located on Pier 25 in Tribeca, Grand Banks has caused massive waves and has gained the attention of all of New York City’s top dogs. Indeed, the waterfront restaurant has rave reviews from CNN Travel, The Observer and New York Magazine. Which only help draw in bigger crowds.
With so many eyes focused on Grand Banks, I’d be doing you a disservice if I didn’t let you know dining here is one of the best things to do in New York City in June. Consider this an inside scoop and make reservations now!
Fun Fact: The ship (technically it’s a schooner) is named the Sherman Zwicker and was hand-built in 1942. In fact, it’s the largest wooden vessel in New York City!

Spend the evening eating your weight in food at Smorgasburg
If you consider yourself to be a foodie, even in the slightest, one of the best things to do in New York City in June is to welcome the return of Smorgasburg, also referred to as “The Woodstock of Eating.”
Smorgasburg is the largest weekly outdoor food market in the U.S. Vendors from all across the Big Apple pitch canopies and come together enabling you to try a variety of the city’s best cuisines all in one place.
The event is hosted in three NYC neighborhoods. On Fridays they set up shop outside the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Saturdays is the original (and most popular) location in Williamsburg Brooklyn and Sundays they’re in Prospect Park (also in Brooklyn).
With more than 60 vendors you’ll find a broad variety of eats. If you do it right you’ll have to be rolled home. Plus, the portions at Smorgasburg are usually on the smaller side, enabling you to try a plethora of options.
One of the best things to do in New York City in June is meeting up with friends and jumping from vendor to vendor trying all the delicious food.
This is one of the most popular events in New York City in June, drawing 20,000 – 30,000 visitors every weekend!
Address: Marsha P. Johnson State Park in Williamsburg, World Trade Center in the Financial District and Prospect Park in Brooklyn

Mermaid Parade
Just register and join thousands of other New Yorkers and visitors as you march down the streets of Coney Island dressed as mermaids. The event is like the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras, but in New York City.
In fact, Mardi Gras was the inspiration behind this event back in 1983. Since then folks have come in from around the world to partake in this parade. Dress as creatively as you can and join fellow mermaids as you take part in one of the best things to do in New York City in June.
If you’re registering to march in the parade, assembly starts at 10 AM. If you’re just going to watch the parade starts at 1 PM.

Kick off the summer season by going rooftop bar hopping
The warm climate makes being at the top of a windy restaurant more manageable. There’s no windchill to worry about. And the dip in temperature after the sun sets is still manageable with a sweater.
And speaking of sunset, during the month of June in New York City it takes place between 8:45 and 9PM. This makes dates and drinks so much more romantic since there’s no need to scram to the rooftop bar right after work.
