  • Dominique Ansel | Cronut: croissant + donut… need I say more?

  • Doughnut Plant | Creme Brûlée (it’s just as delicious as it sounds).

Watch the National Puerto Rican Day Parade

Date: June 9th, 2024
Address: Fifth Avenue, from 43rd to 79th Streets.

You can’t tell the story of New York City without mention of Puerto Ricans. From the mid-1800’s until present, folks from the small island have weaved themselves into the fabric of NYC (Puerto Ricans make up nearly 10% of the city’s population).

And since 1958 one of the best things to do in New York City in June has been to celebrate your Caribbean neighbors at the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. The parade marches down Fifth Avenue from 43rd to 79th Streets on June 11th, beginning at 11AM.

It’s estimated more than one million spectators cheer on the parade annually. Meaning it’s one of the most popular things to do in New York City in June. It only makes sense, boricuas (Puerto Ricans) know how to party!

Catching a performance by the New York Philharmonic has been considered one of the best things to do in New York City in June since 1965. Pairing world-class classical music with incredible open air venues would normally cost an arm and a leg, but thankfully these events are completely free.

Classical music isn’t to everybody’s taste but seeing it live is entirely different. The shows are epic and monumental, and an experience you won’t soon forget. Summer in New York City wouldn’t be the same with out Concerts in the Parks!

Make Reservations at Grand Banks

In the 18th and 19th centuries, oyster barges dotted NYC, fading over time. Grand Banks revives this tradition, offering sustainably harvested oysters on one of the city’s best waterfront restaurants. Closed in colder months, its summer reopening is eagerly awaited.

Located on Pier 25 in Tribeca, Grand Banks earns acclaim from CNN Travel, The Observer, and New York Magazine. With so many eyes focused on Grand Banks, I’d be doing you a disservice if I didn’t let you know dining here is one of the best things to do in New York City in June. Consider this an inside scoop and make reservations now!

Fun Fact: The ship (technically it’s a schooner) is named the Sherman Zwicker and was hand-built in 1942. In fact, it’s the largest wooden vessel in New York City!

Greenpoint Things to Do NYC Bar Blondeau

Kick Off the Summer Season by Going Rooftop Bar Hopping

Date: All of June

Although most rooftop bars start dusting off their tables in early spring, the best time to visit isn’t until closer to summer. That’s because June in New York City is when the temperature finally averages T-shirt level. The warm climate makes being at the top of a windy restaurant more manageable. There’s no windchill to worry about. And the dip in temperature after the sun sets is still manageable with a sweater.

And speaking of sunset, during the month of June in New York City it takes place between 8:45 and 9PM. This makes dates and drinks so much more romantic since there’s no need to scram to the rooftop bar right after work.

Need suggestions on which rooftop bars are worth visiting in New York City in June? We are currently working on a roundup of the best. Until then check out 10 Tasty Lower East Side Rooftop Bars (You Won’t Want to Miss).

June Festivals in New York City

Brooklyn Film Festival

Date: May 31st – June 9th, 2024
Address: Films will be screened at three different venues, listed here.

A lesser known neighbor to the Tribeca Film Festival, the Brooklyn Film Festival is in its 26th year as one of the best things to do in New York City in June. Screening a slew of films from all over the world, the Brooklyn Film Festival offers a unique experience and it won’t cost you your first born child (like the Tribeca Film Festival will).

As an added bonus, all my antisocial friends will rejoice in learning the festival also offers virtual screenings so you don’t even have to put on pants. Tickets are available here.

Tribeca Film Festival

Date: June 14th – 16th, 2024

Few names resonate with the casual movie lover more than the Tribeca film festival. Up-and-coming filmmakers get their opportunity to be showcased along with their established counterparts. This June in New York City will be the 20th anniversary of this beloved summer festival and I anticipate it’ll be a good one. For the opportunity to see the newest and greatest films passes can be purchased here.

SummerStage Festival

Date: 2024 dates TBD

SummerStage is a festival that takes over New York City starting in June. The flagship venue for their concerts is at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park but they also put on shows at other parks in all 5 boroughs. The free shows require no RSVP and are first come first serve, however they also put on benefit concerts that require a ticket.

SummerStage’s music varies in genre, so make sure to check the calendar to see who is performing before heading to the park. The event gets lively with people of all different generations and backgrounds. It’s a great way to spend your time if you’re looking for things to do in New York City in June.

Governors Ball Music Festival

Date: June 7th – 9th, 2024
Address: Grand Central Parkway and, Van Wyck Expy, Queens, 11354

If you’ve never been to a music festival you’re missing out. You get to enjoy multiple concerts over the course of a few days at a single venue taking all the stress out of planning. One of the best things to do in June in New York City is to swing by the Governors Ball Music Festival at Flushing-Meadows Corona Park Queens.

The headliners for the three-day festival are Lizzo on Friday June 9th, Odesza on Saturday June 10th and Kendrick Lamar on Sunday June 11th. General admission tickets start at $139 which (for comparison) is half what I paid to see Kendrick Lamar alone a few years back. Tickets, full lineups, and more info is available here.

Rum Festival

Date: June 8th, 2024
Address: Metropolitan Pavilion – 125 W 18th St, New York, NY 10011

One of the best things about becoming an adult is the ability to become connoisseurs of all things booze. Had I told you I was going to a rum festival in college you’d think shots and hangovers. Instead, the Rum Festival is one of the best things to do in New York City in June and is a respectable experience.

At the June NYC festival you’ll learn about premium rums from the brands that produce them (and get a few samples). Speaking from first hand experience, having someone guide you through the layers of liquor is an invaluable experience.

Five Points Festival in Brooklyn

Date: June 8th – 9th, 2024
Address: 337 Butler St, Brooklyn, NY 11217

I struggle putting the Five Points Festival into words. At its core it’s an expo with street artists, toy makers, craft breweries, and collectors meet – so essentially an adult recess. You can visit and leave with a new tattoo or a Japanese vinyl, who knows where the wind will take you.

The eclectic bunch makes for one of the best festivals in New York City in June, and for a full list of participants be sure to visit the official website. The event takes place in Gowanus, Brooklyn and tickets consists of two full days of fun.

Moving to New York City

Museum Mile Festival

Date: 2024 date TBD

New York City has designated 5th Ave from 82nd to 105th Streets the Museum Mile. During the Museum Mile event the streets are closed to vehicular traffic and the doors of the museums along the stretch are opened to the public free of charge.

The street gets lively with vendors and musicians among the crowd adding to the ambience. The event takes place from 6 PM to 9 PM regardless of weather, so don’t forget to add this to your list of things to do this summer in New York City. Further info about this free summer activity in New York City can be found here.

Tips for Visiting NYC in June

  • Wear comfortable shoes: Visiting New York City in June means you’ll be outside exploring during the majority of your trip. The weather is too good to pass up on! Since you’ll be putting some miles on your shoes make sure to pack a pair that are comfortable and reliable. This is NOT the time to break in new shoes.
  • Start your day early: New York City in June sees a lot of out of town visitors hoping to see the most popular landmarks, restaurants and museums. Start your day as early as possible and visit your “must see” places first thing in the morning.
  • Wear sunscreen: You know I’m a stickler for sunscreen! Here’s the only sunscreen I recommend. I’ve been using it exclusively for the past 8+ years and can’t recommend it enough.
  • Pack sunglasses: As the days get longer and the sun sets later, you don’t want to be squinting all day. If you’re going somewhere with buildings that might have reflective windows, bring polarized sunglasses to help minimize any unpleasant glares (at least until the sun fully sets).
