Bakeries in the West Village
#15. Magnolia Bakery
One of the most iconic bakeries in the West Village is Magnolia Bakery. The reason? Because it was prominently featured in Sex and the City.
The 30 second cameo, where Miranda and Carrie sit outside on a bench and eat cupcakes, forever changed the success of the West Village bakery.
The bakery is known for making decadent cakes and delicious cupcakes, but the banana pudding is where it’s at. Grab a container to go when you feel that sweet tooth craving hitting you hard for a dessert you won’t soon forget.
You can find a handful of Magnolia Bakery locations throughout the city, but the bakery in the West Village is the flagship store and worth a visit.
Address: West 11th Street, 401 Bleecker St, New York, 10014

#14. Posh Pop Bakeshop
For anyone on the hunt for bakeries in the West Village that offer gluten-free options (specifically for sweet treats), Posh Pop Bakeshop comes out on top.
Their beautiful desserts have become an instagram sensation but not without reason! They taste as great as they look.
Expect to find everything from decadent cheesecakes to moist cupcakes, tall layered cakes, cookies, muffins and most notably — brownies. It’s no wonder why locals consider this one of the best bakeries in the West Village for sweets fanatics.
Address: 192 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10012

#13. Barachou
Barachou is one our list of best bakeries in the West Village, for one reason and one reason only… the French cream puffs.
Okay, maybe not just one reason, since all the baked goods and pastries here are great, but I needed to say something dramatic to get your attention.
This West Village bakery is vibrantly pink, and specializes in creating the most delectable cream puffs. Offering an array of flavors to choose from, you’re left in crisis not knowing which one to pick, they all look so dang good.
You can expect to find classic’s like whipped cream or innovative fillings like tiramisu. Barachou is one of the most surprising bakeries in the West Village that I didn’t think I was going to love as much as I did.
Address: 15 8th Ave, New York, NY 10014

#12. The Doughnut Project
The Doughnut Project is one of the few bakeries in the West Village that always seems to have a line out the door. Trust me when I tell you, it is 100% worth waiting for!
Tucked between Bleecker and 7th Ave. this unpretentious donut shop churns out some of the best (and unique) desserts in the Greenwich Village.
All donuts are hand-crafted and made in small batches, so chances of you getting a fresh donut are high. You can find innovative options like “Those Beetz Are Dope” which is made up of a beet glaze and filled with ricotta whip.
The Doughnut Project is also one of the few bakeries in the Greenwich Village that has vegan options (that non-vegan eaters love just as much!).
Local’s Tip: The Doughnut Project is a 3 minute walk from the famous “Friends” TV show, apartment building. Make sure to swing by for a photo. Here is the official address: 90 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014.
Address: 10 Morton St, New York, NY 10014

#11. Mille-Feuille Bakery
A hundred years ago I took a French class and convinced myself I should have been born French. In my mind the French could do no wrong. Nowhere does this ring more true than the country’s knack for making the best baked goods in the world.
Mille-Feuille is one of those bakeries in the West Village that is perfectly charming and quaint. It’s not very large, but it has all the basics covered. They excel at making macaroons and croissants, making them a natural stop for a mid-day pick-me-up while exploring the neighborhood.
Local’s Tip: After grabbing your treat from this bakery in the West Village, head over to Washington Square Park– it’s a 3 minute walk away!
Address: 552 LaGuardia Pl, New York, NY 10012

#10. Senza Gluten Cafe & Bakery
Senza Gluten Cafe & Bakery is one of the most charming bakeries in the West Village. There, I said it. The bakery is an offshoot from Senza Gluten, a gluten-free Italian restaurant serving delicious pasta dishes to those who had to swear it off in the past.
The food is great, to be sure, but the bakery (located one block away) is where this gem truly shines.
This bakery is open Wednesday-Saturday 9am-10pm and offers both sweet and savory gluten-free baked goods. Since this is one of the best bakeries in the West Village, expect to find delicious brunch dishes like the quiche (my favorite), pizza and knock-out muffins.
From the website: We are aware that having celiac disease or choosing a gluten free diet can sometimes be challenging, especially when dining out. At Senza Gluten we want to make sure your dining experience is perfect and safe by guaranteeing 100% gluten free cuisine. Please note that we accept cash and American Express only.
Address: 171 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012

#9. Sweet Rehab
If you’re searching for one of the prettiest dessert bakeries in the West Village, drop everything you’re doing and run to Sweet Rehab.
Offering a great assortment of teas, treats and cakes, Sweet Rehab has taken the world by storm with all the picture-worthy treats they sell.
I’m serious, the desserts here are almost too perfect to even eat. Using fresh ingredients and making everything in house, it comes as no surprise Sweet Rehab has made it on our list of best bakeries in the West Village.
You can find plenty of seating both inside and outside the bakery. I recommend trying the cake in a jar if you plan on just grabbing a treat and leaving.
Before I get any hate, many locals debate if Sweet Rehab is considered to be located in SoHo or the West Village. Personally, it isn’t enough of a big deal to me so I feel comfortable adding it to my list of bakeries in the West Village, worth checking out.
Address: 135 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012

#8. Chip City
Opened in 2017, Chip City has really made a name for itself when it comes to the NYC cookie scene. Among top competitors like Levain, many locals dare to claim Chip City as their personal favorite in the city.
And it’s not without good reason! If you love cookies that are larger than life, then Chip City is the spot for you.
This is one of those bakeries in the West Village you can smell from a mile away. I mean who doesn’t just drool at the scent of freshly baked cookies?
In an effort to keep to keep things fresh and exciting, Chip City rotates four cookie flavors, daily. The reason this is one of the best bakeries in the West Village is because the odds of you getting a warm cookie are high.
Fun Fact: Popular Youtube star, Emma Chamberlain featured a clip of her eating a chocolate chip cookie from Chip City in the West Village. She claimed it was the best cookie she had in NYC!
Address: 298 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10014

#7. Molly’s Cupcakes
Starting out in Chicago, the famous Molly’s Cupcakes opened up shop in New York City back in 2011. Serving exceptionally moist cupcakes with the creamiest icing, Molly’s Cupcakes is among the best bakeries in the West Village.
Molly’s also offers an array of cookies, pie and ice cream to choose from but they all play second fiddle to the true work of art, the cupcakes.
What makes Molly’s Cupcakes so famous is that they’re known for their center filled flavors. That’s right! Every cupcake gets a (generous) filling that correlates to the flavor, guaranteeing to melt in your mouth. No dry cupcakes here, folks!
Including plenty of vegan options, this Greenwich Village bakery is perfect for any special occasion (or if you simply feel like treating yourself, no judgment here).
Address: 228 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10014

#6. Maman
Ask any local about their favorite bakeries in the West Village and the honest ones will mention Maman.
Offering a whimsical and charming vibe, this is one of the best bakeries and cafes in the West Village if you’re looking to catch up with an old friend.
Originally started as a French bakery and cafe in SoHo, Maman quickly became renown for perfectly executed baked goods. But what really put them on the map was Oprah listing their nutty chocolate chip cookie as one of her favorite things.
I never miss an opportunity to order the quiche, chocolate croissant and their famous macadamia nut cookie. Plus, the coffee is always great!
Address: 800 Washington St, New York, NY 10014

#5. Ovenly
One of the best bakeries in the West Village is Ovenly, which is popular for their chocolate cake.
Ovenly’s version of the iconic Brooklyn Blackout has been attracting folks from all corners of New York state for years now.
Defined by an impossibly deep black color, this cake is no joke. In fact, if you have a friend that constantly complains about the lack of chocolate flavor in a chocolate cake, while simultaneously taking shots of chocolate syrup from the fridge, this cake will stop them in their tracks.
Another crowd-pleaser is the impeccable Pistachio Cardamon Cake which has the most satisfying blend of comforting flavors. This is one of those bakeries in the West Village where after a single bite, you’ll understand the hype around it.
Address: 523 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014

#4. Fabrique Bakery
Want to know how I know Fabrique Bakery is one of the best bakeries in the West Village? Because everything is made in-house and always served fresh, it really doesn’t get any better than that.
This Swedish bakery originally started in Stockholm and now boasts two other locations in London and New York City.
Famous for their cardamom buns, when I tell you, run don’t walk — I mean it! The treat is perfectly dense and full of flavor and unlike anything I’ve ever had before.
For those who don’t know what a cardamom bun is, it’s honestly a bit complicated to explain — but I’ll try. Essentially, cardamom buns are best described as a cross-breed between a cinnamon roll and pull-apart bread. Typically a soft, flakey interior with a crunchy exterior and stuffed with a sugary cardamom dusting.
Regardless, New York City is lucky to have a location. As one of the best bakeries in the West Village, I suggest trying any treat at Fabrique Bakery you can get your hands on.
Address: 348 W 14th St, New York, NY 10014
#3. Aux Merveilleux de Fred
Aux Merveilleux de Fred is simply one of the most stunning bakeries in the West Village, all thanks to the giant chandelier that fills the room. The sparkling glass transports you to France and the treats are dreamy enough to make you start drooling as you step foot in the door.
Don’t let the fact that this is one of the most gorgeous bakeries in the West Village, distract you from the real reason we’re here, the baked goods.
The pastries are flakey, moist and baked fresh — you’ll have a hard time picking just one! Everything is made on site, right in front of your eyes.
You must try the Le Merveilleux, it’s made up of Meringue, chocolate whipped cream coated with shavings of dark chocolate!
Address: 37 8th Ave, New York, NY 10014

#2. Rocco’s
Name any baked good, dessert or pastry you can think of and I guarntee Rocco’s has you covered.
Rocco Generoso Sr.’s left Italy and immigrated to New York City back in 1956. He got a job as a dishwasher at a special little place called Zema’s Bakery (the same special little place Rocco’s now stands).
Learning everything he could from the original owner, Rocco eventually ended up buying the shop in 1974 and taking over the business.
Today, over 60 years later, Rocco’s is among the best bakeries in the West Village. You can expect to find everything from cannolis to full sized cakes at the Greenwich Village bakery.
Locals and visitors alike can’t help themselves when they step foot into Rocco’s, it’s like letting a kid loose in a candy store — the options are endless!
If you struggle with making decisions you may want to steer clear of this West Village bakery because you will be tempted to order everything.
Address: 243 Bleecker St #4438, New York, NY 10014
#1. Mah-Ze-Dahr
Since opening in 2014, Mah-Ze-Dahr has risen to the top of most “best bakeries in NYC lists” within a mere seven years. No easy feat in a city chock-full of bakeries and steep competition.
The owner, Umber Ahmad is a James Beard Award semi-finalist (a huge deal in the culinary world) who left the lofty confines of the financial world to purse her dream of baking.
She’s lovingly called a banker-turned-baker, and let me tell you — we are all better for it, she’s incredibly talented.
The West Village bakery lives up to the name by offering years of world-travel experience that shines through in the various assortments of baked foods, and nowhere is this more evident than in the delectable assortment of cakes.
The chocolate cake, aptly called The Devil in Ganache, is known to induce dreams for months after. And the carrot cake? Well, that makes me want to crawl over the register to kiss the chef. I mean, the cream cheese frosting is infused with maple!
There’s no denying that Mah-Ze-Dahr is one of the best bakeries in the West Village, but don’t just take my word for it, order a slice next time you’re in the area!
