Best gluten free bakeries New York City

Modern Bread & Bakery
I stumbled upon Modern Bakery completely by accident (before my friend visited NYC), and what a happy coincidence that turned out to be. Without realizing that Modern Bread & Bakery was a gluten-free bakery in New York City, I ordered a bagel.
The bagel was so delicious (with a chewy texture) that I promptly returned the following weekend for more. It wasn’t until my second visit that I noticed the gluten free signage.
And then it hit me, did I accidentally eat a gluten-free bagel last weekend?
Turns out I did, and I loved it as much as a traditional bagel — which is why I consider this one of the best gluten free bakeries in New York City. Their baked goods span the gamut and you’ll find everything from challah to cupcakes, filling both your sweet and savory cravings.
I took my friend here during her visit and she raved about the bagels as much as I did. In fact, we returned to this gluten-free bakery a few times during her month-long stay.

Erin McKenna’s Bakery
Erin McKenna’s opened in 2005 with a simple mission in mind: Serve gluten-free treats tailored to folks with gluten, egg, soy and dairy sensitivities. The success was staggering and within a year it became one of the most popular gluten free bakeries in New York City.
Churning out some of the tastiest celiac-free baked goods in NYC, it’s impossible to leave with just one treat in hand. Not only is this one of the best gluten free bakeries in NYC, but the entire bakery is also kosher, egg-free, dairy-free, nut-free and soy-free as well.
The best part is that you wouldn’t even know it if it weren’t for the signage. The baked goods are on par with their gluten counterparts, and equally satisfying. The seasonal treats are especially great and warrant a detour.

7 Grain Army
Brooklyn’s 7 Grain Army strives to encourage healthy purpose-based eating habits through nourishing (gluten-free) comfort foods. Every item on the menu is loaded with super-foods because the belief is that proper nutrition keeps us healthy and happy.
But don’t, for a second, make the mistake of assuming that this epic gluten free bakery in NYC churns out “healthy tasting food” because that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The muffins alone warrant an hour-long subway ride and no one would be able to tell the bread is gluten-free unless told. Every baked good at this beloved gluten free bakery is outstanding and guaranteed to satisfy (as evidenced by the long lines).
This isn’t health food; it’s about creating a healthier relationship with food.

By The Way Bakery
By The Way Bakery is yet another great option for those in search of the best gluten free bakeries in New York City. The entire selection of toothsome baked goods is gluten-free, dairy free, certified kosher and so dang delicious.
Started by a lawyer-turned-baker, this bakery bills itself as an old-fashioned bakery where everything is homemade from scratch in small batches. The passion and effort shine through!
I made a point to pick up some treats from this beloved gluten-free bakery in New York City before my friend’s arrival and she found herself impressed by how delicious everything was. The lemon poppy-seed muffin was exceptional!
Locations: 2440 Broadway, New York, NY 10024 & 1236 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10028

Noglu
Noglu is a gluten-free bakery in the Upper East Side that opened in 2015 by French pastry chef, Frédérique Jules. Focusing on organic and local ingredients, this is the perfect spot to get a mid-day pick me up if you’re in the neighborhood.
Long gone are the days when gluten free treats felt like a punishment. Indeed, this delightful gluten-free bakery in New York City puts those distant memories to shame. The tarts and muffins are especially good but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
Address: 1260 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10128

Posh Pop Bakeshop
My friend was on the hunt for the best gluten free bakeries in NYC specifically for sweet treats and Posh Pop Bakeshop came out on top. Their beautiful desserts have become an instagram sensation but not without reason! They taste as great as they look.
Expect to find everything from decadent cheesecakes to moist cupcakes, tall layered cakes, cookies, muffins and most notably — brownies. It’s no wonder why locals consider this one of the best gluten free bakeries in NYC for sweets fanatics.

Senza Gluten Cafe & Bakery
Senza Gluten Cafe & Bakery is one of the most charming gluten free bakeries in New York City. There, I said it. Located in the West Village, the bakery is an offshoot from Senza Gluten, a gluten-free Italian restaurant serving delicious pasta dishes to those who had to swear it off in the past.
The food is great, to be sure, but the bakery (located one block away) is where this gem truly shines. This bakery is open Wednesday-Saturday 9am-10pm and offers both sweet and savory gluten-free baked goods in New York City. Expect to find delicious brunch dishes (the quiche is great), pizza and knock-out muffins.
From the website: We are aware that having celiac disease or choosing a gluten free diet can sometimes be challenging, especially when dining out. At Senza Gluten we want to make sure your dining experience is perfect and safe by guaranteeing 100% gluten free cuisine. Please note that we accept cash and American Express only.

Elisa’s Love Bites
Elisa’s Love Bites is a gluten free New York City Bakery offering exceptional treats for those with dietary restrictions. Every item on the menu is chock full of flavor and baked to perfection. The banana bread deserves a shout-out, as does the chocolate cake, which is satisfyingly moist and gives of an intensely rich flavor.

Simply Sweet
Some New Yorkers argue that Simply Sweets offers some of the best gluten free desserts in New York City, and it’s hard to disagree. Specializing in plant-based desserts, the cakes from Simply Sweet have folks driving (or taking the subway) from all corners of the city.
The bakery was founded by a woman who was inspired to reinvent her eating habits after the birth of her son. She realized the importance of proper nutrition and found herself frustrated by excessive sugar consumption, which seems impossible to escape.
Her solution? Open a bakery that focuses on creating organic, raw, vegan, gluten-free and refined sugar-free desserts in NYC.
“Every delicacy is created to tantalize your taste-buds with the hope that you will be inspired to embrace a healthy lifestyle – beginning with what you eat. When you indulge in ‘Simply Sweet’ products, you can always have peace of mind that every bite is totally guilt-free!”

Las Delicias Patisserie
If you’re looking for high-end gluten free bakeries in New York City make a beeline for Las Delicias Patisserie. Established in 2010, this bakery is named in honor of the chef’s blissful childhood summers in her mother’s kitchen on Avenue Las Delicias in Punta Del Este.
The impetus for this gourmet gluten free NYC bakery was simple: bake high-end pastries using the best locally sourced ingredients. And dang, the proof is in the (proverbial) pudding.
Las Delicias produces traditional pastries with a luxurious twist, largely thanks to the expert execution and mastery of technical culinary skills. Expect to find every classic re-imagined, from cannelés to challah.
Address: Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue (15th Street)
Note: During COVID Las Delicias transitioned to online orders exclusively.
Best Gluten-Free Desserts in NYC
Cookie from Levain Bakery
I’m willing to bet that I’m not the first to tell you about the world-famous cookies from Levain Bakery but something that most folks don’t realize is that Levain offers gluten-free cookies now!
They currently only offer the gluten-free option for the original cookie (chocolate chip + walnut) but I’m telling you, this thing is as good as the tradition cookie. In fact, I sometimes prefer it to the traditional one.

Gluten-free pie from Petee’s Pie Company
Petee’s Pie Company makes the best pie in New York City (fighting words, I know, but I stand behind them). Thankfully folks with dietary restrictions are not excluded from the party because Petee’s makes a handful of gluten-free pies. If you’re a pie-fanatic (*raises hand) I’m willing to bet this will be the best gluten-free pie you’ll ever have.

Banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery
The banana pudding at Magnolia Bakery could launch a thousand ships and Magnolia Bakery now offers a gluten-free version as well! Swing by to pick up the gluten-free banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery and see what all the fuss is about.
