If you’re anything like me, you love carbs. Therefore searching for the best bakeries in Brooklyn is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because I’ve gotten to try some of the most delicious pastries, breads and treats that I could’ve ever dreamed of! A curse because it seems to have made all my pants shrink…
There are so many components that I take into consideration when weighing out Brooklyn’s best bakeries. The shop must be clean, welcoming, but most importantly the goods must deliver!
And allow me to say this, Brooklyn is no short comer when it comes to holding its own against the best of the best. The melting pot it is means bakers from all backgrounds, ethnicities and ages call this borough home.
So in order to help my friends out I’ve conjured up this list of what I consider to be the best bakeries in Brooklyn. Bear in mind however that these are my opinions. Although I’ve tried a lot of bakeries during my 7 years living in the borough, I haven’t tried them all!

Best Bakeries in Brooklyn
7 Grain Army
One of the best bakeries in Brooklyn is 7 Grain Army, which strives to encourage healthy purpose-based eating habits through nourishing (gluten-free) comfort foods. Every item on the menu is loaded with super-foods because the belief is that proper nutrition keeps us healthy and happy.
But don’t, for a second, make the mistake of assuming that this epic gluten free bakery in NYC churns out “healthy tasting food” because that couldn’t be further from the truth.
This isn’t health food; it’s about creating a healthier relationship with food.
7 GRAIN ARMY
The muffins alone warrant an hour-long subway ride and no one would be able to tell the bread is gluten-free unless told. Every baked good at this beloved Brooklyn bakery is outstanding and guaranteed to satisfy (as evidenced by the long lines).

Don Paco Lopez Panaderia
Don Paco Lopez Panaderia (bakery) is a goldmine of Mexican sweet bread. The family business goes back 3 generations to the state of Puebla in Mexico, and has been one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn since 1991. They provide both the Mexican community and their multicultural neighbors alike with the homestyle flavor of Mexico.
There’s a multitude of options to choose from as far the pan dulce (sweet bread) is concerned. If it’s your first time visiting I suggest the traditional and easily recognizable concha. At Don Paco’s they bake it as good as anywhere you’ll find in NYC, making it airy and fluffy. It has a sweet, sugary topping that crumbles with every bite.
After you try the concha it’s all fair game. I suggest letting your inner child loose and grabbing anything that looks good. When I was growing up my parents would buy enough pan dulce to have with coffee over the next few days, and I encourage you do the same at this delicious Brooklyn Bakery.

Martha’s Country Bakery
Martha’s Country Bakery has become one of best bakeries in Brooklyn thanks to good old fashioned hard work. In a world where everyone is trying to create the next best thing, Martha’s is staying true to the classics but executing them extremely well.
Everything is baked on site using fresh, quality ingredients and it can be appreciated with every bite. This year they’re celebrating their 50th anniversary in business, making it safe to say they have a bit of experience making tasty treats.
My go-to’s at Martha’s are always either the cheesecake or apple pie (sometimes both) although my wife swears by the lemon merengue tart. It’s hard to make a bad choice at Martha’s since it’s one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn!

Simply Sweet
Some New Yorkers argue that Simply Sweets is one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn, and it’s hard to disagree. Specializing in plant-based desserts, the cakes from Simply Sweet have folks driving (or taking the subway) from all corners of the city.
The bakery was founded by a woman who was inspired to reinvent her eating habits after the birth of her son. She realized the importance of proper nutrition and found herself frustrated by excessive sugar consumption, which seems impossible to escape.
Her solution? Open a one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn with a focus on creating organic, raw, vegan, gluten-free and refined sugar-free desserts in NYC.
“Every delicacy is created to tantalize your taste-buds with the hope that you will be inspired to embrace a healthy lifestyle – beginning with what you eat. When you indulge in ‘Simply Sweet’ products, you can always have peace of mind that every bite is totally guilt-free!”

Mille Feuille
A hundred years ago I took a French class and convinced myself I should have been born French. In my mind the French could do no wrong. Nowhere does this ring more true than the country’s knack for making the best baked goods in the world.
The croissant is a prime example. Image a world without croissants!
But most of us can’t go to France on a whim for fresh pastries, so what to do? How about a quick visit to one of the cutest bakeries in Brooklyn, Mille Feuille. This beloved bakery churns out some of the best croissants in New York City, as evidenced by the long lines.
I can’t help but swing by whenever I’m within a mile of this gem, thankfully they have three locations to choose from. The one in Prospect Heights is among the best bakeries in Brooklyn.

Tasty Pastry Shoppe
The best way to describe Tasty Pastry Shoppe is by using its name. By striving to create a way for everyone to indulge in all the sweet treats they want they’ve become one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn. If flavor is the name of the game, Tasty Pastry Shoppe is winning.
Where they truly shine is in regards to their custom orders. Take a quick look at their Instagram and you’ll find intricate custom cakes, my favorite of which is a retirement cake made to look like a laptop.
They keep with the times too, making birthday cakes to suit all the interests of their customers. Whether it’s an Encanto or Baby Shark there is sure to be a design they can bring to life.
They have all your regular fixings you’d find at the other best Brooklyn bakeries too, like cookies, muffins and cupcakes.
Address: 8216-18 13th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11228
Bakeri
Trying one of Bakeri’s delicacies is like seeing color for the first time. Everything from their coffee creations to delicious baked goods is guaranteed to satisfy, which is why I consider this one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn.
As someone that grew up eating conchas (Mexican sweet bread) like it was my job, I can’t recommend their’s enough. Paired with a latté and a good friend, it’s hard to beat combination.

Villabate Alba
Looking for the best cannoli you’ve ever had? It’s at Villabate Alba and it’s the reason I consider this one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn. Opened in 1979 to Sicilian Angelo Alaimo and his son, it’s become a local Bensonhurst favorite.
It’s not hard to tell the bake shop is Italian, with green white and red decorating the walls and the pastries. Brooklyn is lucky to have an authentic bake shop so well grounded in its origins. They offer a plethora of colorful and sweet Italian treats like rainbow cookies, lobster tails and even gelato!
Family owned and operated for more than 40 years, New Yorkers can feel good spending their dollars at Villabate Alba. And I’m not the first to notice you’ll feel even better after your belly is full of pastries from one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn!

L’Appartment 4F
At first engineer Gautier Coiffard was reluctant to bake the tiny croissants for cereal his fiancé Ashley asked for. Having been living in America for 10 years he was trying to replicate flavors he experienced as a boy growing up in France, not go viral on TikTok.
However one day he did, and viral it went. Baking in their New York City apartment made it so they had a hard time fulfilling the copious amount of orders coming in. So in April of 2022, they opened L’Appartment 4F paying homage to the 400 SQ Ft apartment unit that saw their humble beginnings and creating one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn.
There are other (regular) sized options to order as well. Le Framboise is among my favorites. It’s an almond croissant with an imported raspberry ganache that makes me feel oh so fancy with every bite, especially considering I’m at one of Brooklyn’s best bakeries.
Address: 115 Montague Street, Brooklyn NY 11201
Oneg Hemishe Bakery
Hemishe Oneg Bakery has been a local Jewish favorite in the South Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn since the 1980’s. Founded by two sisters who escaped the Holocaust, their signature dishes were comforting to the large jewish community who call that area home.
In the present it is still a family owned business, being run by the grandchildren, using grandma’s beloved recipes. The bakery’s fame has also began to reach outside the community, drawing New Yorkers in from all five boroughs in to give one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn a try.
Best known for their double chocolate babka (which is often regarded as the best in the city) I’d be doing you a disservice if I didn’t recommend it. It’s heavy and dense and comes with enough chocolate to satisfy any sweet tooth. It’s even pretty to look at!
There are also plenty of other kosher treats to accompany that babka, (seriously, you have to try it) like rulegach and challah which are delicious themselves. But for the last time, you have to order the double chocolate babka, it’s what makes Oneg Hemishe Bakery one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn.
